Student Exchange ProgramICE's Scheduled Departure Program a Failure

Last month ICE announced a pilot program called the Scheduled Departure Program, which would allow immigrants that had been ordered deported to avoid being sent to jail by turning themselves in to have the agency arrange for their departure.  ICE spent more than $40,000 just on advertising the program, which ran in five U.S. cities from August 5 until August 22.  However, ICE reported that only 8 people out of a total of 457,000 of those eligible took advantage of the program, and the agency will therefore not be implementing this program again. Critics of the program believe that it was a half hearted effort to improve the problem of illegal immigration, since it offered no real incentives for immigrants to turn themselves in for deportation.  It is also feared that ICE will use the program’s failure as a way to justify violent raids.
