ICE's Scheduled
Departure Program a Failure
Last
month ICE announced a pilot program called the Scheduled Departure
Program, which would allow immigrants that had been ordered deported to
avoid being sent to jail by turning themselves in to have the agency
arrange for their departure. ICE
spent more than $40,000 just on advertising the program, which ran in
five U.S. cities from August 5 until August 22. However, ICE reported that only 8
people out of a total of 457,000 of those eligible took advantage of the
program, and the agency will therefore not be implementing this program
again. Critics of the program believe that it was a half hearted effort
to improve the problem of illegal immigration, since it offered no real
incentives for immigrants to turn themselves in for deportation. It is also feared that ICE will use the
program’s failure as a way to justify violent raids. You can read the

Nearly 600 Arrested in Largest Immigration Raid in U.S. History
The raid took place on
Monday August 25 at the Howard Industries Inc. factory in Laurel, Mississippi.
As reported by Reuters, the factory, which makes electrical equipment,
was targeted as part of an ongoing investigation of fraudulent use of Social
Security numbers by illegal immigrants. A reported 595 people were
arrested, including citizens from Peru, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama,
Honduras, Brazil, and Germany. 475 of those arrested were taken to a
detention facility in Jena, Louisiana, 106 were released on humanitarian
grounds, and several minors are currently in the custody of the office of
refugee resettlement.

A
Farewell to Robert Almosd
As
many of you may already know, we recently said goodbye to Robert Almosd,
an Associate that had been with the firm since 2001. After more than 15 years in the U.S.
Robert has returned to his native Hungary to assume a position as the
Regional Director of Amnesty International in Hungary. Beach-Oswald Immigration Law Associates
is sad to see Robert go, but we are proud of his achievements and wish
him luck in all of his future endeavors.

Thomas
Dierkes – Office Assistant 
Thomas
has lived in the DC area his entire life, and is a recent graduate of the
College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, where he obtained his
Bachelor of Arts in government and history. Thomas began
working at Beach-Oswald as our Office Assistant in July of 2008 and says
that his favorite part about working in the law firm is interacting
with all of the clients! We’re excited to welcome Thomas to the
team!
Claire de
Gerin Ricard – Law Clerk
Claire
de Gerin, our newest Law Clerk, was born in the south of France and moved
to the U.S. in 1999 with her husband. She received her Master Degree of
Law at the University of Aix-en-Provence in France and then obtained an
L.L.M in International Law at the George Washington University in
Washington, DC. She worked in
France in the Legal Department of the Chamber of Commerce and for Coptic
Orphans, a U.S. non-profit. Claire loves the area of immigration law, and
is excited to be assisting the talented lawyers at BOILA! Claire is
fluent in French and Spanish.
